Fermi-LAT observations of the Sagittarius B complex

چکیده
Aims. We use 5 years of Fermi-LAT data towards the Galactic-centre giant molecular cloud complex, Sagittarius B, to test questions of how well-mixed the Galactic component of cosmic rays are and what the level of the cosmic-ray sea in different parts of the Galaxy is. Methods. We use dust-opacity maps from the Planck satellite to obtain independent methods for background subtraction and an estimate for the mass of the region. We then present high-quality spectra of γ-ray emission from 0.3 to 30 GeV and obtain an estimate of the cosmic-ray spectrum from the region. Results. We obtain an estimate of the mass of the region of 1.5 ± 0.2 × 107 M using the Planck data, which agrees well with molecular-line-derived estimates for the same region. We find the the γ-ray flux from this region is fitted well with a cosmic-ray spectrum that is the same as is observed locally, with evidence of a small over-density at intermediate (1–10 GeV) energies. Conclusions. We conclude that the γ-ray and cosmic-ray spectrum in the region can be well-fitted using a local cosmic-ray spectrum.

Gamma-ray Burst Theory in the Fermi Era
The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi satellite detected emission above 20 MeV only in a small fraction of the long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) at 8 keV-40 MeV. Those bursts that were detected by the LAT were among the brightest GBM bursts. The emission detected by LAT seerms to be delayed respect to the one detected by the GBM. In thi...
متن کاملFermi-LAT Observations of Gamma-Ray Bursts
The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope observatory is a pair conversion telescope sensitive to gamma-rays over more than four energy decades, between 20 MeV and more than 300 GeV. Acting in synergy with the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) the other instrument onboard the mission the LAT features unprecedented sensitivity for the study of gammaray bursts (GRBs) in te...
متن کاملSearch for gamma-ray emission from AE Aquarii with seven years of FERMI-LAT observations
AE Aquarii (AE Aqr) is a cataclysmic binary hosting one of the fastest rotating (Pspin = 33.08 s) white dwarfs known. Based on seven years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) Pass 8 data, we report on a deep search for gamma-ray emission from æ. Using X-ray observations from ASCA, XMM-Newton, Chandra, Swift, Suzaku, and NuSTAR, spanning 20 years, we substantially extend and improve the spin eph...
متن کاملFermi Observations of GRB 090902 B : A Distinct Spectral Component in the Prompt and Delayed Emission
We report on the observation of the bright, long gamma-ray burst, GRB 090902B, by the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and Large Area Telescope (LAT) instruments on-board the Fermi observatory. This was one of the brightest GRBs to have been observed by the LAT, which detected several hundred photons during the prompt phase. With a redshift of z = 1.822, this burst is among the most luminous detec...
متن کاملGamma-ray Observations of the Supernova Remnant Rx J0852.0−4622 with the Fermi Lat
We report on gamma-ray observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J0852.0−4622 with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. In the Fermi LAT data, we find a spatially extended source at the location of the SNR. The extension is consistent with the SNR size seen in other wavelengths such as X-rays and TeV gamma rays, leading to the identification of the gam...
